PMC-Sierra announces first symmetric 10G EPON platforms

March 17, 2017

PMC-Sierra Inc today announced complete systems for symmetric 10Gbit/s EPON platforms which will enable system vendors and carriers to offer next generation fiber access solutions

10G-EPON, which stands for 10Gb/s Ethernet Passive Optical Network architecture, is being standardised by the IEEE P802.3av task force.

PMC-Sierra’s announcement concerns symmetric configuration, which operates at 10 Gb/s data rate in both upstream and downstream directions.

The taskforce is also standardising an asymmetric configuration which operates at 10 Gb/s in the downstream direction and 1 Gb/s in the upstream direction.

PMC-Sierra will demonstrate the new Optical Line Terminals (OLT) and Optical Network Units (ONU) at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC), March 23-26, 2017, at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Diego.

Raphael Sankar, vice president of marketing for PMC-Sierra’s Fiber to the Home Business Unit, said: “This performance will allow carriers to provide new services, such as the next level of HDTV broadcasting and advanced business offerings, while further reducing capital expenditures”.

The new EPON devices are interoperable with EPON ONUs deployed around the world that are based on PMC-Sierra’s devices, facilitating the upgrade from 1G EPON to 10G EPON.
